"Enough of money !!!". Trump has federal supports to the NGO involved "in disorders"

“Democracy in America is at very serious risk”, says a septuagenarian who has lived in Lisbon for 30 years

North Americans residing in Portugal protested today, in Lisbon, against President Donald Trump’s policies and to show the world that the United States “does not have kings”.

The gathering took place next to the equestrian statue of D. José I, where more than a hundred participants held signs and shouted in chorus: “No kings, no crowns” (Neither kings, nor crowns, in a free translation)

One of the citizens present at the demonstration displays a poster surrounded by five red carnations, which reads “America needs what Portugal knows – Fight for true liberation”.

“Stand up, fight back when fascists attack” is another of the cries heard by the people, at the same time that some speakers asked for volunteers to speak.

“We are here to show solidarity with American citizens who disagree with Trump’s policies, despite the fact that there are those who consider us terrorists,” said one of the speakers.

Gerry Walkney, 71 years old, moved from Setúbal where he has lived for almost two years, because he is an “avowed democrat” and considers it necessary to have a “great union of Americans” to dethrone the current President who “is terrible in office and has only harmed the country and the world”.

“It is necessary for Congress to do something to remove this President, which has not happened, as Congress has done nothing”, he stressed.

Behind Gerry Walkney, a protester held high a sign reading: “Above us only sky”.

“Bring back democracy” and “No Trump/No KKK [Klu Klux Klan]/No fascists in USA” are other slogans from participants in the protest, organized by Americans in Portugal United in Protest – AMPT.

“Fight ignorants Not immigrants” declared a poster.

Richard Emerson, a septuagenarian resident in Lisbon for 30 years, declared himself independent, but told Lusa that he joined the protest because the country where he was born “cannot continue to be handed over to a fascist”.

“Democracy in America is at very serious risk and it is only possible to defeat ‘King’ Trump’s policies with a mass protest movement at national and international level.”

It’s the “only way”, as happened when the war in Vietnam ended”, he cited as an example.

With a sign that read “A Cowering Congress Tolerates Tyrannical King Trump”, topped by two small US flags, Emerson maintained the need for such protests to continue in the country and around the world to depose a man who is a “source of hatred for the entire world”.

Chris Dee, born in Philadelphia, where the US Constitution was written, has lived in Lisbon for two and a half years and was one of the speakers at the protest.

Speaking to Lusa, she justified her presence at the event for two reasons: firstly, because she has always lived in freedom, having been forced to leave the USA due to Trump’s dictatorial regime.

Stressing that she grew up in Philadelphia, where the Constitution was drafted, whose norms Trump now “rejects and throws away at all times”, she expressed fear for her 21-year-old son, who is a university student in Hawaii.

“Like me, my son has dark skin, and I fear for him every day. Because Trump only likes white supremacy”, he stressed.

Furthermore, I didn’t like my son and eventual grandchildren “living under fascism in one of the countries with the greatest democratic traditions in the world”, he observed.

For her part, Leslie Sisman, one of the organizers and speakers at the protest, highlighted “the incompetence” of the current North American President.

Living in Lisbon for four years, Leslie Sisman, retired, lived in Manhattan.

A city “where there is peace” in a country that has “quality of life” and where “democracy still works”, he said about Lisbon and Portugal.

Convinced that the North American President suffers “from dementia”, she added that in addition to being “crazy, he surrounded himself with criminals in order to put his unspeakable policies into practice”.

“It is important to remember that it is not just the United States that is at risk when governed by Trump. Because this President affects the entire world”, he highlighted.

Asked by Lusa whether the number of protesters met the organization’s expectations, Leslie Sisman said yes.

“I know of many Americans who were not present because they go to the country frequently and fear reprisals,” he said.

“Many did not come out of fear of what might happen to them. As I do not intend to return to the country, I will continue to fight for the return of freedom and democracy to the United States”, he concluded.
