Poor on budget and rich on IR makes it uncomfortable to “go upstairs”, says Haddad

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, stated at an event alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Saturday (18) that the PT member’s directive about putting the “poor in the budget and the rich in Income Tax” bothers the upper classes — whom he referred to as “upstairs”.

“In Brazil, those who pay taxes are, of course, the working class. If you move up in the social classes, you move up a step, there comes a time when the State no longer catches up with you and you don’t pay taxes”, began Haddad.

“And what President Lula determined: ‘Haddad, I’m going to invite you to be Minister of Finance, but you have to promise me one thing, we’re going to carry out my campaign slogan, it’s the poor in the budget and the rich in Income Tax. This group has to pay taxes'”, he continued.

And he added: “That’s what’s changing and that’s what bothers you, you can’t calculate how much it bothers the floor above.”

Lula participated in an event with students from the Rede de Cursinhos Populares (CPOP) in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) this Saturday.

Throughout his speech, the president focused on the importance of offering quality education to the less favored classes.

“This country is in your hands. And you will be responsible, if I arrived, you can arrive; if I didn’t have a chance, you are having a chance. For the love of God, grab this chance with both hands, dedicate yourself”, he stated.

At the end of his speech, Lula also sent a message to presidents of other countries not to dare “talk rude to Brazil”.

“We studied at the university in Foz do Iguaçu, in Latin America. We want to form a Latin American doctrine, with Latin American students, so that we can dream that this continent will one day be independent, that never again will a president from another country dare to speak rudely to Brazil, because we won’t accept it. It’s not a question of courage, it’s a question of dignity and character”, he said.
