The Internet is flooded with recipes for cinnamon sticks, which dominate Polish kitchens in autumn. This time we present a recipe for a hundred times better cardamomsi.e. Finnish buns with cardamom, but don’t worry – they also contain cinnamon. They will be perfect for warming, spicy tea.
At first glance, cardamoms look very similar to cinnamon. They are even prepared similarly because they are made from yeast dough. You could say that Finnish-style buns have the best aroma because they contain both cardamom and cinnamon.
It is worth serving them like cinnamon sticks – sprinkled with powdered sugar or covered with thick icing. We recommend decorating them with crushed nuts or almonds.
What ingredients do we need to make cardamom?
Cake:
- 2 cups of wheat flour;
- 1 cup of milk;
- 1/2 cup of sugar;
- 100 g of butter;
- 25 g of fresh yeast or 7 g of dry yeast;
- 1 egg;
- 1 teaspoon of cardamom;
- a pinch of salt.
Filling:
- 100 g of butter;
- 4 tablespoons of brown sugar;
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon;
- 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom.
To make cardamoms, first prepare the dough leaven: heat the milk in a pot until it is warm. Remove it from the stove and add yeast, 1 tablespoon of sugar and cardamom. Then add the butter and mix until it melts.
Then we sift the flour into a bowl, pour the rest of the sugar onto the dough, pour in the prepared leaven and form a roll. We also add the yolk, a pinch of salt and knead the mass for a moment.
Cover the bowl with the prepared dough with a cloth and set aside for 45 minutes. Once it has doubled in volume, knead it again and roll it out into a rectangle.
In the next step, we put the filling on the dough: first spread butter on it, and then sprinkle it with sugar previously mixed with cinnamon and cardamom.
Then we wrap the rectangle into a tight roll and cut it into pieces about 4 cm wide. Place the snails on a baking tray lined with baking paper and press them gently.
Spread Finnish-style yeast rolls with beaten egg white. Initially, bake them in an oven preheated to 30 degrees for 15 minutes. After this time, increase the temperature to 200 degrees and continue baking for another 15-20 minutesuntil the buns are golden in color.
