To those who support the top hats – 10/18/2025 – Juca Kfouri

Not a week goes by without new complaints from the Public Prosecutor’s Office appearing duly documented about the last three presidents of Corinthians — Andrés Sanchez, Duilio Monteiro Alves and Augusto Melo, in that order, or disorder.

It is unnecessary to remember how much Sanchez was acclaimed when the team was champion or, similarly, in relation to Melo for a simple state title. Monteiro Alves, not even that.

It’s incredible how unconcerned people are with the methods for winning cups, whether fraudulent or those that produce monstrous debt — and Corinthians’s is approaching R$3 billion.

One day it was the Russian mafia, MSI. Anyone who reported it was harassed in Pacaembu.

Today they are accomplices of national criminal organizations that are increasingly transnational. Those who reported them were treated as anti-this and anti-that.

Top hats like Eurico Miranda (Vasco), Andrés Sanchez (Corinthians) Mustafá Contursi (Palmeiras), Edmundo Santos Silva (Flamengo) and Augusto Melo (Corinthians); José Eduardo Mesquita Pimenta (São Paulo), Carlos Miguel Aidar (São Paulo) and John Textor (Botafogo); Wagner Pires de Sá (Cruzeiro), Vitório Piffero (Inter) and Emil Pinheiro (Botafogo) form a team of heroes for the unwary in a hurry and become villains for everyone.

From being idolized by fans, journalists or influencers, they subsequently fell into disgrace, not because of the crimes they committed, but because the results on the pitch became negative.

Players and coaches are the ones who win titles.

Top hats, in Brazilian football, with the usual exceptions, do a lot when they don’t get in the way.

Like certain neo-Pentecostal bishops, they exploit other people’s passions and, thankfully, end up under impeachment, an instrument that is not part of the practices and customs of the churches.

Of the team mentioned above, some were convicted in court, others are very close to being convicted.

There are also those who haven’t even won cups, which is why they are left off the list, such as Duilio Monteiro Alves (Corinthians), José Carlos Peres (Santos) and Orlando Rollo (Santos). But they also caused colossal losses.

How many times, when the Russian mafia bought Corinthians, fans went crazy with the presence of Carlitos Tevez, Mascherano, Nilmar etc. did they attack those who reported dirty money with the argument that, “if it entered through the Central Bank, it is clean”?

The final result is known: Corinthians Brazilian champion in 2005 and relegated in 2007.

The worst thing is that, if other criminals appear tomorrow, in any club, with easy solutions to difficult problems, they will be welcomed as saviors of the country.

If they bring players, if they win titles, damn the means, long live the ends.

“Are the methods mafia-style? I’m not from the police”, they say, cynical and careless about the bill that will arrive sooner or later.

Note to the rare reader that the four former presidents of the CBD/CBF banned from football are not even mentioned, because they chose to exploit the confederation, not any particular club.

The glories of Pelé, Mané, Didi, Tostāo, Rivellino, Romário, Ronaldos and Rivaldo (five devastating mistakes) belong to them and their companions, without the company of criminals.
