The president of , , stated this Friday (17) that relations with the country are going through a good moment and that trade negotiations “are going very well”. According to him, the climate of dialogue with Beijing has been constructive and there is an expectation of a meeting with the president “in the coming weeks”, at . Trump also highlighted that he maintains a “great relationship” with the Chinese leader and said that the meeting “must be maintained”, despite recent bilateral tensions.
The Republican also indicated that he could bring forward the date of entry into force of the additional 100% tariffs on Chinese products, currently scheduled for November 1st, “if he wanted”, but gave no sign that he intends to do so.
The Treasury Secretary, , acknowledged that China adopted “a very provocative commercial escalation” the previous week, when announcing restrictions on exports related to rare earths, but stated that tensions have been decreasing and that he expects reciprocal treatment between the two countries. He added that he plans to speak with Chinese representatives today.
