The defense of federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) filed a request with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights requesting a review of the conditions of her imprisonment in the Rebibbia women’s penitentiary, in Rome, Italy.

The parliamentarian’s lawyer claims that the prison unit does not offer the necessary medical treatment for the illnesses she faces.

According to lawyer Fábio Pagnozzi, the document was signed by Brazilian senators and deputies, including Flávio Bolsonaro, Damares Alves, Magno Malta and Eduardo Girão, who visited Zambelli about a month ago.

The defense claims that the parliamentarian faces serious health problems, such as fibromyalgia, cardiovascular disease, severe depression and needs medical follow-up after the removal of a brain tumor.

The lawyer hopes that the Italian authorities will review the conditions of detention and that Zambelli will be released or, at least, receive the necessary treatment.

Zambelli has been in prison since July 29, after being sentenced to ten years in prison for hacking into National Justice Council (CNJ) systems. She was considered a fugitive by Brazilian justice and included on the Interpol list.

So far, the Italian court has denied requests for provisional release and house arrest, citing a risk of flight.

Zambelli remains in prison pending the extradition process to Brazil, where he will serve the sentence imposed by the Federal Supreme Court.
