The government’s proposal to suspend the obligation for driving schools to obtain a National Driving License (CNH) has generated debates about safety and driver training. In an interview with Agora CNN, traffic safety specialist Carlos Augusto Elias expressed concern about the measure, which aims to make the process less bureaucratic and more accessible.
According to Elias, the driving school is currently the only institutional space where traffic education works. Although he recognizes that the current system needs improvements, the expert warns that the elimination of the requirement could have negative consequences for road safety.
For the specialist, driver training needs to go beyond technical aspects, such as maneuvers and traffic rules. “Traffic is a space for social interaction, where we need to act with empathy and think collectively”, argues Elias, defending a reformulation that prioritizes behavioral and ethical aspects.
Alternatives for cost reduction
The expert highlights that there are other ways to make the , such as the review of state taxes and the use of resources from traffic fines to help low-income people registered with CadÚnico, a possibility already provided for in the Brazilian Traffic Code since August.
Elias also criticizes the lack of broad discussion on the topic, highlighting that the (National Traffic Council), a common procedure in significant changes to traffic legislation.
