Amazon Web Services failure takes down websites and apps

Outage hit services like Fortnite, Snapchat, Coinbase, Venmo and Signal

AWS (Amazon Web Services) faced a failure this Monday (October 20, 2025) that brought down or reduced the performance of several websites and applications in different countries.

The problem affected popular platforms such as the game Fortnite, the messaging app Signal, the Snapchat and Venmo networks, as well as the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

There are also reports of instability on other platforms that use AWS infrastructure, such as the games Clash Royale, Clash of Clans and Pokémon Go; mobile apps such as Life360, My Fitness Pal, Duolingo and Xero; and its own platformssuch as Prime Video, Amazon Music and the website Amazon.com.

The AWS status panel indicated “high error rates and latencies” in several services in the US-East-1 region, in the north of the State of Virginia, in the United States, which concentrates part of the company’s infrastructure.

According to the from AWS, the problem began around 4:11 am (Brasília time), when there was an increase in error rates and slowness in services in the affected region.

The failure originated from an anomaly in the DNS system that impacted DynamoDB and caused repercussions on other platforms. At 6:27 am (Brasília time), the company reported “significant signs of recovery”, but maintained the warning that some requests could continue to fail until full normalization.

Coinbase, one of the main cryptocurrency trading platforms, reported in a publication on X that “all funds are safe”despite the temporary disruption caused by the AWS failure.

Failures in AWS services often have a ripple effect, as the company is one of the largest global providers of digital infrastructure. Social media platforms, games and financial operations depend on their servers to function.

AWS is the cloud computing division of. Created in 2006, it provides on-demand digital infrastructure to businesses and governments, including data storage, website hosting, processing and artificial intelligence services. It is one of the leaders in the sector, competing mainly with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
