Bag had diapers and milk, as well as the baby, male, who is “stable and well cared for”. The child will have been born approximately 24 hours ago.

A newborn baby was left in the early hours of this Monday with the Sapadores de Leiria Firefighters, who transported him to the Leiria Hospital, confirmed the fire commander.

The case occurred at 03:57, when the male baby was found by a firefighter on duty, at the entrance of the fire department building, inside a shopping bagsaid the source.

The baby was then taken to Leiria Hospital to be evaluated and the case was handed over to the authorities. He is “stable and well treated”, according to the clinical director of ULS in Leiria, Catarina Faria.

The information was provided by the woman herself, who added that the shopping bag, in addition to the baby, contained diapers and milk.

“The child is covered with clothes, milk and is effectively at an adequate temperature so that he can be helped in time,” said the doctor.

“The hospital will take care of the child, the nurses and doctors will provide all the care the child needs and we will let the competent authorities tell us the next steps and we will collaborate with them”, he added.

The pediatrician on duty told the CM that the baby weighs three kilos and 500g and that “he was covered by a blanket”, not showing “any type of change in his health status”.

Video surveillance images were saved from outside the barracks, which could help identify who abandoned the newborn.
