The Climate Observatory classified the drilling of an exploratory well in block FZA-M-059, on the Equatorial Margin, as “disastrous”. The approval was given by Ibama.

“The approval is a sabotage of the COP and goes against the role of climate leader claimed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the international stage”, stated the Observatory in a note.

The organization stated that it will go to court to denounce “illegalities” in the licensing process.

“The decision is disastrous from an environmental, climate and socio-biodiversity point of view and, to face it, civil society organizations and social movements will go to court to denounce the illegalities and technical flaws in the licensing process, which could render the license null and void”, adds the statement.

The organization also stated that the license contradicts science and opposes decisions by international courts on the urgency of stopping the expansion of fossil fuels.

The approval was granted to Petrobras this Monday (20) after years of waiting and clashes between the government, the state-owned company and Ibama.

The exploratory well is located in deep waters of Amapá, 500 km from the mouth of the Amazon River and 175 km from the coast. Drilling is expected to begin immediately, with an estimated duration of five months, as informed by Petrobras.

The Climate Observatory is an entity that brings together more than 130 environmental organizations with the aim of discussing decarbonization, global warming and sustainability.
