End of time change in sight? Spain advances with EU proposal for 2026

Pedro Sánchez, Spanish Prime Minister

This Monday, Pedro Sánchez will present a proposal to end the change in time, which is expected to come into force in 2026. The Spanish Prime Minister argues that the change disrupts the biological clock.

The head of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced that Spain will propose to the European Union the definitive end of time change to Europe.

Sánchez announced this decision on social media in the week in which, as is usual practice, it will be necessary to switch to winter time in the European Union.

For the head of the Spanish Executive, this time change it no longer makes sensethe majority of citizens complain that it is not done and science states that it no longer represents an energy saving and disrupts biological rhythms.

“It barely saves energy, on top of having a negative impact on people’s health and their lives,” said Sánchez.

The proposal will be presented this Monday to the European Council to enter into force in 2026. Sánchez also recalls that the European Parliament I had already voted in favor of ending daylight saving time six years ago and called for compliance with this “majority vote”. Despite support for the proposal, it failed due to a lack of consensus among States.

“In every poll you ask, the majority of people in Spain and Europe are against changing the time. Europe must listen to its citizens and act quickly. We want a more modern European Union, which thinks about people’s day-to-day lives. It’s time to synchronize Europe with peoplenot with the clock”, the Spanish Prime Minister further explained

The leader of the Madrid Government concludes by arguing that a useful policy “is one that listens to citizens, also listens to science and incorporates it into legislation”.

Remember that winter time will start next weekendin the early hours of Saturday to Sunday. The time will then change again on March 29, 2026, for the summer regime. The current time change regime is regulated by a 2000 European directive.
