The director of the National Economic Council of the United States, Kevin Hassett, stated this Monday, 20, that the US government shutdown “will probably end this week”. He warned, however, that if the blockade persists, “the White House will need to look very closely at stronger measures that we can take to bring them to the table,” he said, in reference to Democratic senators, during an interview with CNBC.
Hassett also commented on recent trade tensions with Beijing. “We were surprised by China’s actions,” he said of rare earth export controls, adding that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will have meetings with Chinese representatives in the coming days.
According to him, the meetings should “clarify misunderstandings” about bilateral negotiations.

Asked about the possibility of being nominated for the presidency of the Federal Reserve (Fed, the North American central bank), Hassett declined. “I have the best job in the world right now,” he said.
