In a post on social media, PT member highlights that the winner of the Bolivian elections can count on the Brazilian government’s commitment to continue working for the benefit of bilateral relations
President Luiz Inácio da Silva congratulated the elected president of , Rodrigo Paz, on his victory at the polls this Sunday (19). In a post on social media, this Monday (20), Lula said that he sent a letter to the Bolivian, who is a senator for the center-right Christian Democratic Party (PDC). “In the letter, I reiterate the Brazilian government’s priority in its relationship with Bolivia, with which we share an extensive border, but also a relationship of friendship and respect,” wrote Lula.
Lula highlighted that the elected president can count on the Brazilian government’s commitment to continue working for the benefit of bilateral relations and cooperation on topics of mutual interest. “Bolivia is a fundamental partner in building a more integrated, fair and supportive South America,” he added.
Lula also stated that the conclusion of the electoral process “in a climate of tranquility and harmony” demonstrates Bolivian society’s commitment to democracy, “which must continue to guide our entire region”.
Amid an economic crisis, Paz’s victory over his conservative rival Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga marks the end of almost two decades of Movement for Socialism (MAS) governments, which had the support of the country’s indigenous majority. However, the PDC was unable to obtain a legislative majority, which will force the new president to establish alliances to govern.
Paz’s apparently moderate platform, which promises to maintain social programs and promote private sector growth, appears to have resonated with left-wing voters disillusioned with the MAS, founded by Evo Morales, but wary of Quiroga’s austerity measures. The new president will take office on November 8th.
