A significant amount of preparation still needs to be done before the planned summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Budapest, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday. The DPA agency reminds that the goal of the summit will be to end the war in Ukraine, writes TASR.

“A lot of preparatory work still needs to be done,” said Peskov according to the Russian news agency TASS. He added that the teams of both countries will have to solve several open questions and “preparations for the summit have not yet fully started”. TASS also reported that, according to Peskov, “no details are known yet” regarding the meeting of the presidents.

In response to Trump’s comments on Friday, in which he called for a ceasefire on the current front lines, Peskov replied that Russia’s position regarding this conflict has not changed. DPA reminds that Ukraine has so far insisted on regaining all lost territory.

Trump announced the meeting with Putin after their joint phone call on Thursday, which he described as productive. Peskov subsequently declared that the summit could take place within the next two weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Budapest as the venue for this meeting because according to him, it will not serve the interests of Kyiv, but primarily the interests of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He suggested Switzerland, the Vatican and Turkey as better alternatives, adds DPA.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that its head, Sergei Lavrov, spoke about the summit of the presidents of the US and Russia with his American ministry partner Marco Rubio. According to the ministry, they had a “constructive conversation about possible concrete steps”. AFP reported.
