The President of Colombia also stated that, unlike the Republican, he ‘doesn’t do business’, as he is a socialist and believes ‘in help, the common good and the common goods of humanity’
The president of Colombia, , responded this Sunday (19), to the accusations of the president of , , who had called the Colombian an “illegal drug leader” and announced the end of North American subsidies to the country. In a publication on X, Petro said that “Colombia has never been rude to the USA”, but that Trump is “rude and ignorant” towards Colombians.
Petro also stated that, unlike Trump, he “does not do business”, as he is a socialist and believes “in aid, in the common good and in the common goods of humanity – the greatest of all: life, put in danger by its oil”. The Colombian president denied any link with drug trafficking and said he did not understand “the greed” that, according to him, defines capitalism.
“A mafioso is a human being who encapsulates the best of capitalism: greed. I am the opposite, a lover of life,” he wrote. “Read One Hundred Years of Solitude, as your charge d’affaires did in Bogotá, and perhaps you will learn something about loneliness”, published the Colombian leader, in reference to the work of Gabriel García Márquez.
Petro’s reaction comes after Trump announced, via Truth Social, that the US will cut subsidies to Colombia and threaten to “close the death camps” linked to drug production in the country if the Colombian government does not do so.
