Petro responds to Trump’s accusation and calls him ignorant

US President says Colombian leader is a “drug trafficker” and threatens to cut subsidies

The president of Colombia, (Colombia Humana, left), responded on Sunday (Oct 19, 2025) to an accusation made by the leader of the United States, (Republican Party).

On the Truth Social platform, which “strongly encourages mass production” of narcotics in the country. The republican threatened to cut subsidies to Colombia if the government does not combat trafficking. Petro responded, in his profile on , that “Colombia was never rude to the USA, on the contrary, it deeply loved its culture”more than Trump “is rude and ignorant towards Colombia”.

Trump and Petro’s statements come after Petro criticized United States military operations in the Caribbean, close to the coast of Venezuela. The republican stated, without presenting evidence, that Colombia was producing drugs for sale in North American territory. “The objective of this production is to sell massive quantities of the product to the United States, causing death, destruction and chaos”wrote the US president.

Trump said Petro “does nothing to stop it” drug trafficking and called the Colombian president a “unpopular”. Trump threatened to shut down “large-scale payments and subsidies” to Colombia and warned that “the United States will end trafficking on its own, and not gently”.

The United States expanded its military presence in the region, authorizing CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) actions and sending fighter jets, submarines and warships. Since September, operations have resulted in the deaths of at least 29 people, according to US authorities.

Tension between the 2 countries has been growing since September, when the US government accused Colombia of failing in anti-drug cooperation and the State Department canceled Petro’s visa.

The UN (United Nations) indicates that Colombia remains the world’s largest exporter of cocaine. Relations also deteriorated after Petro participated in a pro-Palestinian rally in New York, during the 80th UN General Assembly, in which he called on US soldiers to disobey Trump’s orders.
