Portuguese Pedro Pichardo nominated for world athlete of the year

Leader of the world rankings, the Olympic champion in Tokyo2020 and silver medalist in Paris2024 became triple jump world champion for the second time on September 19, repeating Oregon’s feat in 2022, with a mark of 17.91 meters.

Portuguese Pedro Pichardo, world triple jump champion, is among the five nominated for best athlete in technical disciplines in 2025, World Athletics announced today.

Leader of the world rankings, the Olympic champion in Tokyo2020 and silver medalist in Paris2024 became triple jump world champion for the second time on September 19, repeating Oregon’s feat in 2022, with a mark of 17.91 meters.

Having already won the athlete of the year award three times – once in 2023, the only time it was awarded separately for technical disciplines and running events -, the big candidate is Swede Armand Duplantis, world pole vault champion on indoor and outdoor tracks, breaking the world record four times this year.

Also nominated are Italian Mattia Furlani, world champion in the long jump, Canadian Ethan Katzberg, gold medalist in the hammer throw, and New Zealander Hamish Kerr, world champion in the high jump..

In the women’s sector, five world champions have been named: North Americans Valarie Allman (discus), Tara Davis-Woodhall (length) and Anna Hall (heptathlon), Australian Nicola Olyslagers (height) and Canadian Camryn Rogers (hammer).
