The candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, António José Seguro
Presidential candidate with socialist support without votes against. It is “the closest solution to socialist concerns”. Support “does not harm the freedom that leaders, activists and supporters have always had”.
This Sunday, the PS National Commission approved support for António José Seguro in the presidential elections, with two abstentions and the rest in favor.
The proposal to support the presidential candidate was presented by the secretary general of the Socialist Party and the president of the PS, José Luís Carneiro and Carlos César, respectively.
In the opening speech of this meeting of the PS National Commission, José Luís Carneiro had proposed support for Seguro, considering that he is the one who represents the “field of democratic socialism” in an “especially demanding time”.
In the text, which did not receive any vote against, it can be read that “the support now made public does not harm freedom that the leaders, activists and supporters have always had and should continue to have in an election of this type”.
“The presidential election is, we know, an election in which candidates and voters decide according to personal evaluation criteria. But, it was rightly understood that in due time and at this especially sensitive phase on the national political level, the party should make public its assessment of what is at stake”, he argues.
The PS calls for a vote for its former general secretary António José Seguro “as he considers it to be the closest solution of the concerns and values that motivate citizens and movements that claim the democratic left, as is the case of the Socialist Party”.
“António José Seguro, in addition to being general secretary of the young socialists, was also general secretary of our Party. There is proof“, Carneiro highlighted this Sunday, “in service to democratic values and constitutional values. As a deputy, he was at the origin of one of Parliament’s important reforms, he was Secretary of State for Youth, he was deputy minister to Prime Minister António Guterres and a member of the European Parliament”, added the PS secretary general.
