The accumulation of fat in the liver, known as hepatic steatosis, has increased among people across Brazil. According to nutritionists, the problem often arises because of seemingly harmless foods, but which overload the liver and impair its functioning.

6 foods that seem innocent but cause fatty liver, according to nutritionists

1. Soft drinks

These carbonated drinks are rich in sugar and additives that quickly raise glucose levels and encourage the accumulation of liver fat around the liver.

2. Alcohol

Excessive intake tends to make the liver inflamed and can cause “irreversible damage”, one of the problems being cirrhosis. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in the United States, binge drinking is defined as drinking more than seven alcoholic drinks per week for women and more than 14 for men.

3. White breads

They are produced with a type of refined flour that causes insulin spikes and stimulates fat storage in liver cells.

4. Stuffed cookies

Delicious, irresistible to eat just one, but they silently cause damage. This is because they contain trans fats and corn syrup, which inflame the liver and hinder fat metabolism.

5. Margarine

Always present for breakfast or afternoon snack. Despite its reputation as a butter substitute, this food contains hydrogenated oils and additives that increase liver fat.

6. Sausages (ham, sausage, sausage)

Rich in sodium, preservatives and high levels of saturated fat, they require more effort from the liver to digest and can affect the functioning of the organ. The recommendation is to always consume it in small quantities.
