Alexandre Leitão says that the preliminary report on the Elevador da Glória accident “is extremely serious” and shows that the tragedy “could have been avoided”. “There is responsibility on Carris and those who supervise it”, guarantees the socialist councilor.
The preliminary report from the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF), which is investigating the derailment of the Glória Elevator that killed 16 people, finds that .
Alexandre Leitão, councilor elected by Lisbon, tells SIC Notícias that “the report is extremely serious” and has “a huge set of very serious flaws”, in addition to the cable issue.
“Such as there are no quality systems in maintenance, there is no reporting of faults when found, maintenance is carried out by eye, failure of information to the office that is carrying out this inspection”, lists the PS councilor.
Alexandra Leitão says that “a relationship of trust with Lisbon residents was broken” and considers that “there is no possibility of maintaining, at least, the chairman of the board of directors of Carris”.
Tragedy “could have been avoided”
The socialist refuses to take any political advantage of the case and recalls that she was “very careful during the electoral period”, before the local elections that she lost to Carlos Moedas.
“This very serious accident could have been avoided if there had not been carelessness and negligence (…) From the moment there is an accident with 16 deaths and 20 injuries in a public facility, there must be clarification, determination and enforcement of responsibility.”
“There is responsibility on Carris and those who supervise it”
Speaking to SIC Notícias, . Alexandra Leitão disagrees with Carlos Moedas’ logic.
“When An elevator falls down, it’s always a technical issue, it’s never a politician who purposefully damages the equipment. But political responsibility is not that. [Moedas] is the political responsible, who has a municipal company that reveals very serious operational flaws, which justifies political responsibility”, says Alexandra Leitão, considering that “there is responsibility on Carris and those who supervise it”.
