President of the dwarf party DC (Christian Democracy), João Caldas sent a message to the new president of , Rodrigo Paz, last Sunday (19). Paz belongs to a party of the same name in the neighboring country.
According to Caldas, Paz’s triumph is “a reaffirmation of the ideals and principles that unite all Christian-democratic movements in our region.”
“We are convinced that the strengthening of the Christian-democratic brotherhood will contribute decisively to a more humane, fair and solidary continental integration, inspired by the Christian and democratic values that we share”, says the Brazilian party.
Christian democracy is an ideological line that gained strength in Europe after the Second World War, under the strong influence of the Catholic Church. It is mainly associated with the center-right, as opposed to socialist and communist parties.
In Brazil, it emerged in 1945 and housed exponents such as former president Jânio Quadros and former governor of São Paulo Franco Montoro.
Refounded after the dictatorship, the party was unable to achieve equal expression.
