Carrots are a vegetable that we buy very often. Its taste is appreciated by adults and children, and it is truly versatile in the kitchen. Various types of salads, cocktails and even sauces – carrots will work great when preparing these additions. Snacks such as baked carrots served with hummus are also a hit. I like to put it in my children’s lunchboxes, for example, as a delicious and healthy snack at school or for extracurricular activities.
Eating carrots regularly is great for your eyesight and skin health. Thanks to the content, among others: vitamins A, C, K and some of the B groups, carrots support the proper functioning of the immune system. As one of the sources of dietary fiber, it may also have a beneficial effect on digestion. Some scientific studies indicate that eating carrots may reduce the risk of, among others: stomach cancer.
As you can see, there are many reasons to eat carrots often. However, I know how to store it to keep it fresh as long as possible. There are several ways, and one of them was passed down to me by my grandfather.
You wonder how to store carrots to keep them fresh as long as possible? It all starts at the purchasing stage. If you buy vegetables that you want to store for a long time, choose healthy, hard vegetables. Pay special attention to whether the carrots have any spots or damage. After bringing them home, clean them from lumps of earth and cut off their tops. Importantly, carrots should not be washed. Water is the enemy when it comes to the shelf life of this vegetable.
The method for storing carrots that I still use today was passed down to me by my grandfather. How to do it? Prepare a wooden box and pour a layer of slightly damp sand on its bottom. Place one layer of carrots, sprinkle with dry sawdust, then arrange another layer of vegetables and again sawdust. Do this until the chest is full. Of course, place the box in a cool, dark place as possible. A garage, for example, is ideal for this purpose.
Carrots can also be stored in plastic bags, also adding sawdust. However, there are other options worth considering. As Kateryna Kuskova from deccoria.pl writes “Carrot supplies will also protect the needles of coniferous trees against the development of fungi and mold. Moreover, the vegetables can be sprinkled with garlic or onion peels. When storing carrots in bags, do not tie them. Thanks to this, the vegetable will survive the entire winter.”
However, many people do not have a suitable room for storing vegetables, so they need to look for other solutions. So here comes the question – how long can you keep carrots in the fridge? Place a hard, dry carrot without any strings in a plastic bag with a few holes – this will allow air to circulate and prevent moisture from accumulating. This way, carrots can stay in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. Some of the carrots can also be cut and frozen, this way you will always have a delicious vegetable at hand, e.g. for soup.
As you can see, properly stored carrots can stay fresh for a really long time – just remember some simple rules.
