The chocolate cake is quick to prepare, moist, fragrant and absolutely hassle-free. You don’t need to have an advanced mixer or spend several hours in the kitchen. The cake is made expressly, but you can always see that it was prepared with love.
The combination of chocolate and plums is a duo that tastes very good, especially in autumn. Chocolate gives depth, plums give a slightly sour balance. Together they create something that makes even those who don’t like sweets suddenly ask for more.
Cake from my recipe It’s not overly sweet, so it doesn’t overwhelm you after dinnere. It has something warming about it, especially if you drink it with coffee or tea. And on top of that it tolerates transport very wellso if you’re going to a family home with a cake in a box, this recipe is a hit.
For a form of approx. 25 × 30 cm (i.e. a classic baking tray) or a cake tin (22-23 cm), you need the following ingredients in the following quantities:
- 200 g of butter,
- 200 g of sugar,
- 4 eggs,
- 250 g of wheat flour,
- 3 tablespoons of cocoa,
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder,
- 1/2 teaspoon of soda,
- a pinch of salt,
- 150 ml of milk,
- 3-4 tablespoons of thick plum jam (plus extra for the inside and on top).
Preparation of the chocolate cake:
- Cream the butter and sugar until fluffy – don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing until the mixture is smooth.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, cocoa, powder, baking soda and salt.
- Pour half of the dry ingredients into the egg mixture, add half of the milk, then the rest – the classic rule: take turns.
- Finally, add 2-3 tablespoons of jam – this is what gives the cake moisture and that “plum claw”.
- Pour half of the mixture onto a baking tray lined with baking paper.
- Spread a few tablespoons of jam on top (not too much so they don’t leak out) and then cover with the other half of the dough.
- Bake at 180°C for approx. 40-45 minutes, until the stick is dry.
During All Saints’ Day, we rarely have free time for cooking or baking. But homemade cake tastes exceptional then, especially when we eat them with family, after visiting cemeteries together. That’s why I appreciate this recipe because it can be made in an hour, including washing the dishes. There is no need to chill, beat the egg whites separately or decorate like a wedding cake. Just mix, bake and serve to guests. Before serving, the cake can be sprinkled with powdered sugar or decorated with chocolate icing.
