Police in the US state of Georgia arrested a man on Monday who, according to his family, threatened to shoot at one of the busiest international airports in the city of Atlanta. An assault rifle and ammunition were found in the man’s car, city police chief Darin Schierbaum said. TASR informs about it based on the report of the AP agency.
- Police arrested a man who threatened to shoot at the Atlanta airport.
- The family drew attention to the man’s plans during the live broadcast.
- During the search of the car, they found an assault rifle and ammunition.
- The man was charged with terroristic threats and other serious crimes.
- Thanks to a quick reaction, the crisis was averted.
Police said at a news conference that 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle described his plans for the shooting to relatives during a live stream on social media. According to Schierbaum, the man was already convicted in the past. “Today we are here to inform you of a success and not a tragedy because the family saw something and said something,” said the police chief.
Cagle arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning and parked right in front of the airport terminal entrance. When the police approached him and searched the vehicle based on a tip from the family, found an assault rifle with 27 rounds of ammunition, Schierbaum said.
The man is charged with terroristic threats, attempted grievous bodily harm or possession of a firearm after a previous conviction and at the same time during the commission of a serious crime, Schierbaum said. “Thank God and good information, good intelligence and good people that this crisis was averted,” said Mayor Andre Dickens.
