President of the Republic had a meeting yesterday (Monday) night with the president of the Senate and they adjusted how the process should be; PT member will now talk to Rodrigo Pacheco, who was passed over in the process and formal nomination comes out next week

The president (PT) embarked for Indonesia and Malaysia this Tuesday morning (21.Oct.2025) without indicating a name for the vacancy that was opened in the Federal Supreme Court with that of Roberto Barroso. As anticipated by the Drive, newsletter exclusive to subscribers of Poder360the PT member had a conversation last night at Palácio da Alvorada, with the president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP).

It was agreed between the two, Lula and Alcolumbre, that the nomination to the STF should be made when the President of the Republic returns from his tour of Asia, at the beginning of next week. But before publicly revealing who his favorite is –Jorge Messias, Minister of General Advocacy of the Union–, Lula will talk to the senator (PSD-MG), who was the favorite of Alcolumbre and ministers of the Supreme Court, such as Gilmar Mendes and Flávio Dino.

In last night’s conversation, Lula once again told Alcolumbre what he has been saying to several interlocutors: the nomination of names for the Supreme Court must be exclusive to the President of the Republic. He reaffirmed that he will not accept suggestions. On these occasions, Lula usually cites cases in which he heard recommendations from third parties in the past and later regretted it, as happened with ministers Joaquim Barbosa and Luiz Fux.

The PT member told Alcolumbre that he will continue to give prestige to the president of the Senate, an important ally, but asked him to understand that, in the case of the name for the STF, he will decide alone – and suggested that it will be Jorge Messias. Alcolumbre acquiesced.

Before formally nominating Messias, Lula intends to do broader political coordination work so that the process of approving the name in the Senate is quick and smooth. Yesterday, he already made an agreement with Alcolumbre, who is one of the politicians who most suggests and recommends names for positions in the federal administration. This week, the president of the Senate also had another victory supported by Lula, which was the release of Ibama for Petrobras to begin exploring oil in the Equatorial Margin, a process that will enrich Amapá.

If everything goes as Lula intends, in the middle of next week Messiah’s name will be announced and the process will be accelerated in the Senate. The idea is that approval will take place in 2025 – and the current AGU minister will take office at the Supreme Court before the Judiciary goes into recess, in mid-December.
