Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) invited federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) to take on the role of chief minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic

The president (PT) invited the federal deputy (PSOL-SP) to assume the position of chief minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic. The announcement was made after a meeting held this Monday (20), at Palácio do Planalto. Boulos will replace Márcio Macêdo, who will leave his post after almost two years in government. The appointment will be published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Tuesday (21).

In addition to Macêdo and Boulos, ministers Gleisi Hoffmann (Secretariat of Institutional Relations), Rui Costa (Casa Civil) and Sidônio Palmeira (Secretariat of Social Communication) participated in the meeting. With the change, Lula reinforces the presence of allies from the progressive camp in the political core of the government. Boulos, one of the main names on the Brazilian left, must take a leave of absence from his mandate as federal deputy to take on the new position.

At 42 years old, Guilherme Boulos has established himself as one of the most prominent voices on the Brazilian left and the main electoral force of PSOL. The São Paulo native, with a degree in Philosophy and a master’s degree in Psychiatry, is a professor, psychoanalyst and a public figure who moves between academia, social activism and politics. His political trajectory is marked by a series of candidacies for major positions. In 2018, Boulos ran for President of the Republic and, in 2020 and 2024, he ran for mayor of São Paulo. Although he did not achieve victory in these elections, his performance at the polls demonstrated a growing base of support and placed him at the center of national political debates.

A significant turning point in his electoral career occurred in 2022, when he ran for federal deputy for São Paulo. Boulos emerged as the state’s most voted candidate, winning an impressive 1 million votes, a feat that further accredited him on the political scene. Boulos’ rise is intrinsically linked to his leadership in the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST), where he became a powerful voice in defense of social rights. Among his main political banners are urban reform and improving the supply of housing, themes that resonate with a significant portion of the population and that he has brought to public debate with fervor.
