The expectation was that the president would announce the name of Jorge Messias; Alckmin temporarily assumes the Presidency during the PT member’s trip to Asia
The president (PT) embarked this Tuesday morning (Oct 21, 2025) for an official trip to Asia, with commitments in Indonesia and Malaysia, without having formalized an appointment to the STF (Supreme Federal Court). During the period, the vice-president (PSB) temporarily assumes the Presidency of the Republic.
In a publication, Lula stated that he will participate in the 47th Asean Summit (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the 30th East Asia Summit, in Malaysia. According to the PT member, the mission seeks to expand trade and consolidate Brazil’s presence on the global stage.
Boarding took place at 10 am, in Brasília. Lula will be received on Thursday (Oct 23) by President Prabowo Subianto, in Indonesia. He will then head to Kuala Lumpur, where he will participate in an official visit offered by Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim and in Asean multilateral meetings.
Nomination to the STF
The expectation was that Lula would make official this Tuesday the name of the Union’s attorney general, for the vacancy, who announced his retirement on October 9th.
O Poder360 found that Lula discussed the topic on Monday (Oct 20) with the president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), responsible for conducting the nominee’s hearing. Alcolumbre defended the name of the president of the Senate, (PSD-MG), but accepted the advancement of Messias’ nomination after a direct conversation with Lula.
The PT member reiterated that the prerogative of choice belongs to the head of the Executive and informed STF allies and ministers that the decision has been made.
If confirmed, Jorge Messias’s appointment will be the third made by Lula to the Supreme Court since the beginning of his term. If re-elected in 2026, the president will be able to appoint up to 6 ministers during his 2 terms, shaping a court more aligned with his political and legal vision.
During the trip, Alckmin will lead the government’s domestic agenda, which includes meetings with the economic team and monitoring measures on food security and housing.
