Leaving the post of head of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Márcio Macêdo said he defined it with the President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that he would leave his position to dedicate to a candidacy in the 2026 elections.

Still according to Macêdo, Guilherme Boulos, who takes his place, “is entering because he will not be a candidate, to take care of the management”. According to sources at Palácio do Planalto, the now former minister should become federal deputy for Sergipe.

“I leave with the feeling of a mission accomplished, because all the proposals that the president made at the polls, in the electoral campaign, all the programs, were discussed and organized”, declared Macêdo, in a video published on social media this Monday (20).

In a message alongside the video, Macêdo wished Boulos luck. “So that he can do a great job and move forward with the projects that are underway at the General Secretariat of the Presidency,” he stated.

The change was defined by President Lula after a meeting with Boulos, Macêdo and also palace ministers Rui Costa (Civil House), Gleisi Hoffmann (Secretariat of Institutional Relations) and Sidônio Palmeira (Secretariat of Social Communication), according to a note from Palácio do Planalto.

Boulos’ appointment should be published in this Tuesday’s (21st) edition of the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union).

The exchange had been discussed for months and was announced this Monday. As shown by CNN Brazil in May, Boulos had already signaled his willingness to become minister when he was approached by Lula.

The exchange on the Esplanada represents an attempt by the government to get closer to the electorate with the 2026 elections in mind, since the General Secretariat is responsible for the president’s agendas with representatives of social movements, such as the MTST (Movement of Homeless Workers), linked to Boulos’ activism.
