The Parliament of Japan this Tuesday (21.Oct.2025), 64 years, as the country’s prime minister. She is the first woman to hold the position.

Takaichi was elected leader of the PLD (Liberal Democratic Party, right) on October 4th. The governing party has held power almost uninterruptedly since the 1950s.

In the party’s internal dispute, the 64-year-old politician defeated the former Environment Minister by a narrow margin – 54% to 46%. Before the victory, he had already tried to command the PLD on two occasions: in 2021, against , and in 2024, against .

He is a representative of the nationalist wing of the PLD, with firm positions on security, national identity and foreign policy, which could accentuate tensions with other members of his party. At the moment, the acronym is facing problems related to the loss of popularity, internal divisions and wear after successive political scandals.

The prime minister inherits economic and geopolitical challenges.

The country lives with weak economic growth and a rapidly aging population, which puts pressure on the social security system and reduces the workforce. The country also faces low productivity and heavy dependence on government stimulus policies to sustain economic activity, a scenario that limits fiscal space.

In the external scenario, Japan is located in an unstable region, with historical and regional tensions involving , and . Furthermore, there is a need to maintain the military alliance with the , which is increasingly fragile.

In this context, a portion of society defends the revision of Article 9 of the , which determines that the country renounces war as a means of resolving international disputes and prohibits the maintenance of Armed Forces with offensive potential.
