A true fairy tale in European football. Mjällby AIF, a club from the fishing village of Hällevik, with just over 1500 inhabitants, became Swedish champions for the first time in their history, creating one of the biggest surprises in Scandinavian sport.
The feat gains even more importance considering the club’s history. Less than a decade ago, Mjällby was fighting for survival in the 3rd division, on the verge of insolvency. Today, it lifts the champion’s trophy, with a modest squad, made up mostly of local players and supported by a community that never gave up on the dream.
With a reduced budget, the team managed to defeat giants like Malmö, Gothenburg and Djurgårdens, maintaining an impressive consistency: just one defeat in 27 games. With three rounds to go, Mjällby mathematically secured the title and also guaranteed their presence in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League.
The town of Hällevik is now preparing to experience one of the biggest parties in its history, with celebrations scheduled for the Strandvallen stadium, where it all began. Mjällby could also become the place with the fewest inhabitants ever to participate in the Champions League qualifying phase.
