A new type of secondary school will be established in Slovakia – a secondary industrial school. It will be transformed from the current type of secondary vocational school to a separate type. This is another of the changes introduced by the amendment to the Education Act. The package was finally approved by the members of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic on Tuesday.

The separation of a new type of secondary school is related to a special position in the preparation of future specialized qualified workforce in selected areas at higher levels of qualification due to the ongoing digitization and automation of production and services. Another reason, according to the Ministry of Education, is the need to reflect on the need for the creation of new qualifications and adjustment of the content of education as a result of the advent of artificial intelligence.

The length of study in post-baccalaureate specialized studies and higher professional studies at the same time shortens from two to one year and from three to two years. Within the framework of the new law on higher education institutions, it should be possible to recognize educational outputs and the level of qualification and level of education achieved within the first level of higher education. At the same time, it reflects on the transformation of the secondary industrial school into a separate type with a special definition of its mission. This change is to be effective from January 1, 2026.
