The Municipal Council of São Brás de Alportel was recognized by the Order of Veterinary Doctors (OMV) as one of the ten Portuguese municipalities that invested the most in veterinary support of a social nature.
According to data released by OMV, the municipality represents 4% of the total 2.3 million euros invested since 2020 within the scope of the National Veterinary Health Support Program for Companion Animals at Risk, known as “veterinary check”.
The initiative, part of the Vet Solidário program, launched in 2014 by the Order of Veterinary Doctors, aims to support abandoned animals or animals belonging to needy families, promoting access to essential medical and veterinary care, such as sterilizations, vaccinations, deworming, surgeries and veterinary emergencies.
The municipality highlights that this recognition “translates São Brás de Alportel’s commitment to animal welfare and social support for the most vulnerable families”, highlighting that the investment “reinforces local public health policies, solidarity and community responsibility”.
The municipality also considers that “it is essential to permanently assess needs and adjust responses to the local reality, continually improving measures in the area of animal welfare”.
Residents interested in benefiting from the veterinary check can obtain information from the Municipal Animal Welfare Office, in person or via email.
Applications are evaluated by the chamber, which issues the check for use in participating veterinary centers. Currently, this network has around 400 clinics and 41 local authorities across the country.
The company reaffirms its commitment to “continuing to invest in public policies for animal protection and welfare, promoting a more supportive, balanced and animal-friendly community”.
