This Monday (20), the White House began the partial demolition of the East Wing, the historic wing of the building, to make way for the construction of the new ballroom for the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Construction crews used cranes to remove large portions of the wing’s covered entrance and windows.

Trump had already declared that the investment of US$250 million to expand the hall would be made close to the existing structure, without altering the original building. “It will not interfere with the current building. It will be close, but without touching — and it fully respects the existing building, of which I am the biggest fan,” said the president in July. “It’s my favorite place. I love it.”

The East Wing, built in 1902 and last modified in 1942, is a fundamental part of the American president’s official residence, which has served as a historic symbol for more than two centuries.
So far, neither Trump nor White House officials have commented on the demolition or explained why construction appears to have damaged part of the East Wing, contradicting the president’s previous statements.
The expansion of the ballroom is part of an ambitious project that aims to modernize spaces at the White House, but has generated controversy due to the impact on the historic structure and the high cost.
