The football federations of the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica announced, this Monday (20), a joint bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup, which will be the first edition of the tournament with 48 teams.

FIFA approved it in May. The new format, with 12 groups, will increase the number of matches from 64 to 104 games, equaling the 2026 men’s tournament.

In a joint statement, the federations stated that the proposal seeks to offer “the most impactful tournament in history”, promising to leave a lasting legacy for women’s football in North, Central America and the Caribbean.

“We are extremely proud to lead this bid for 2031 alongside our Concacaf partners in Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica,” said US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone.

“We want to create a legacy that goes beyond 2031”

“We’re excited to drive the progress of women’s football, creating a legacy that goes well beyond 2031 and sets a new global standard for the sport,” added Cone.

The president of the Mexican Football Federation, Mikel Arriola, stated that the joint proposal demonstrates the confidence of FIFA and Concacaf in the candidate nations.

“2031 will be a historic opportunity to consolidate the growth of our sport across the region and inspire a new generation of players and fans in Mexico,” said Arriola.

The federations informed that the official candidacy book will be delivered to FIFA in November, and the final decision must be taken during the entity’s Congress in Vancouver, on April 30, 2026.

Tournament could be the first played in four countries

If approved, the proposal will mark the first Women’s World Cup held in four countries, in addition to being the debut of Jamaica and Costa Rica as hosts of World Cup games.

The United States, which will co-host the 2026 men’s World Cup with Mexico and Canada, already hosted the women’s tournament in 1999 and 2003.

Mexico, in turn, would host the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
