In the early hours of February 8, 2019, a fire in an accommodation at Ninho do Urubu killed 10 boys from the Flamengo base. The youngest were 14 years old, the oldest was 16.
Nine years later, this Tuesday (21), seven accused of arson.
The teenagers slept in containers inside the training center and, according to Agência Brasil, the city of Rio de Janeiro reported that the place did not have a permit to operate as accommodation.
According to experts, the fire started in an air conditioning unit and spread quickly because of the highly flammable coating of the containers.
Sixteen athletes survived the tragedy, escaping through a single door amidst the smoke.
In August 2023, four years after the death of the teenagers, the Court held the first hearing and trial of the criminal case.
