Alcolumbre releases CCJ to vote for Gonet’s reappointment to PGR

Lula signed the renewal of the mandate of the Attorney General of the Republic in August; term of office is 2 years

The president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), released on Tuesday (21.Oct.2025) the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Senate to take command of the (Attorney General’s Office).

The president of the commission, senator (PSD-BA), must confirm the date for analyzing the topic. The senator (PSD-AM) was appointed rapporteur for the case.

Gonet, replacing Augusto Aras, appointed by the former president (PL). The current attorney general’s term would end in December, but the reappointment was brought forward. The president (PT) signed the document to reinstate him.

The Gonet hearing is expected to be held on November 12th. The opinion on the renewal of the PGR should be read on November 5th.

If Gonet’s reappointment is approved by the CCJ, the Senate plenary will hold a secret vote on the issue. For the attorney general to remain in office, at least 41 favorable votes are needed in the House. In 2023, there were 65 votes in favor and 11 against.
