North Korea has fired several short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, South Korea’s military said Wednesday. TASR informs about it according to a report by the Jonhap agency.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it saw the missile launch at approximately 8:10 a.m. local time (1:10 a.m. CEST). Jonhap reminds that North Korea last fired short-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles toward the Sea of Japan on May 8 and 22. The South Korean military has stepped up monitoring in case more missiles are launched and is “providing relevant information to the US and Japan,” according to a JCS statement.

This is the first such incident during the reign of South Korean President Jae-myong I, who took office in June of this year. At the same time, this detonation took place before the planned Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which will be hosted by South Korea from October 31 to November 1. According to the AP agency, US President Donald Trump and other world leaders are also expected to participate in this summit.

North Korea staged a military parade in the capital Pyongyang this month to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. The parade was attended by representatives of Russia and China, and the DPRK demonstrated what it says is the most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile.
