Jaime Madureira embezzled 53,334 thousand euros between 2014 and 2019, years in which he presided over the Humanitarian Association of Porto Volunteer Firefighters.
The former president of the Porto Volunteer Firefighters Humanitarian Association, Jaime Madureirawas sentenced this Wednesday to a suspended sentence of four years in prison for having appropriated 53,334 thousand euros of that institution between 2014 and 2019.
During the reading of the ruling, at the São João Novo Court, in Porto, the president of the panel of judges said that the sentence is suspended for a period of five years and conditioned on the payment of that amount, by Jaime Madureira, to the firefighters.
The payment of 53,334 thousand euros to firefighters must be made in phases, namely per semester (5,353 euros), explained the judge.
The president of the collective highlighted that the former president of the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Porto has no criminal record and cooperated with the courtfactors taken into account when applying the sentence.
“This is a very necessary institution for society and deserves all kinds of respect, therefore, this type of conduct is not acceptable,” said the judge. Noting that there are rules for firefighters’ expenses, the judge stressed that “everything that involves money” must be clarified and controlled.
And, he added, the former president of that institution, by using the money as he did, harmed the firefighters. “This is not acceptable by society”, he concluded.

Between 2014 and May 2019, the former president of the Porto Volunteer Firefighters, taking advantage of his functions, seized for his own benefit or that of third parties 53,334 thousand euros belonging to the association.
The defendant took possession of the cash revenues received by the association which, by his order, were handed over to him, contrary to what happened until the beginning of his duties.
Furthermore, the former president, dismissed in May 2019, refueled your vehicle using the fleet card issued in the name of the association and benefited from the reimbursement of personal expenses that he charged to the association for meals, expenses in supermarkets and other expenses outside his functions and without authorization for that purpose.
The investigation concluded that Jaime Madureira celebrated several festive dates at the expense of the association’s money, points out.
