Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, San Francisco-based Anthropic is known for the Claude family of language models, which compete with OpenAI’s GPT models. Like its competitors, the company has been raising large sums to keep up with the race to advance AI, which industry leaders say requires more resources for research, innovation and meeting consumer demand.
Recently, Anthropic held initial fundraising conversations with Abu Dhabi-based manager MGX, about a month after completing a US$13 billion round. This financing, led by Iconiq Capital, with Fidelity Management and Research Co. and Lightspeed Venture Partners as co-leads, nearly tripled Anthropic’s valuation to $183 billion, including the funds raised.
Google has already invested around US$3 billion in Anthropic, with US$2 billion in 2023 and another US$1 billion at the beginning of this year. Amazon, in turn, committed to investing around US$8 billion in the startup, which is a key customer of Amazon Web Services and a major user of the company’s custom AI chips.
