The Chamber of Deputies scheduled for this Tuesday (21) the vote on the urgency of the bill that aims to prohibit charges for hand luggage on flights in Brazil. In an interview with CNNthe project’s rapporteur, Neto Carletto (Avante-BA), stated that the merits of the proposal should be voted on next week.

The text under discussion guarantees passengers the right to carry hand luggage weighing up to 10 kilos, in addition to a personal item, at no additional cost. Carletto declared that the current charge is “abusive” and harms millions of passengers.

The rapporteur indicated that he intends to expand the discussion to also include the issue of checked baggage. According to Carletto, since 2017, when charging for checked baggage was implemented, airlines promised to reduce ticket prices, but what was observed was the opposite movement.

During a meeting with party leaders, there was support for the proposal to ban charges for hand luggage. Carletto informed that he is in dialogue with ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) and with the association of airlines to improve the text.

The project must define clear rules regarding weight, dimensions and quantity of baggage allowed. After the vote in the Chamber, the text will go to the Federal Senate, where a vote is expected next week, according to coordination with the president of Casa Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP).
