A party congress will take place in the first half of 2026, at which it will discuss substantial changes in its functioning and political program. The idea is to also use the event as a kind of starting gun for the campaign for the re-election of President Luiz Inácio da Silva.
The congress was a campaign promise from the party president. The decision was endorsed this Monday (20) by the party’s National Executive.
“The congress is a kind of party constituency, where everything can be discussed”, says Jilmar Tatto, vice-president of the party. Since the founding of the PT, 45 years ago, there have been only seven of these events.
Among the program themes that should be discussed are confronting the extreme right, changes in the world of work, the centrality of environmental issues
There may also be changes to the party’s statutes and internal rules, such as limiting the re-election of leaders in positions within the party bureaucracy.
Previous congresses even discussed the concept of socialism adopted by the PT, which has always defended a democratic model, far from authoritarian experiences. The theme may be revisited at the next event.
The date of the congress has not been defined, with April as one of the possibilities.
