The Algarve Food Bank Against Hunger marked World Food Day, on October 16th, with the final of the first edition of the Missão D’Chef competition, which took place at the School of Hotel Management and Tourism in Faro.
According to the institution, “the basis of the program was nutrition and full use of food, mitigating food waste, enhancing the meals served by institutions in the Algarve’s social sector, taking into account the Mediterranean Diet.” The organization adds that “hygiene and food safety, and cooking techniques were also worked on with the cooks in the competition.”
The event distinguished the three best cooks in the region’s social sector, in a competition presented by Algarve actor João Mota. The winner of the edition was Telma Costa, from Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Silves, followed by Natália Gonçalves, from Casa do Povo de São Bartolomeu de Messines, and Cirlene Sousa, from Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vila do Bispo.
15 cooks from 13 institutions in the Algarve participated in this first edition, from Vila do Bispo to Vila Real de Santo António. The program began in March and culminated on World Food Day.
The president of , Nuno Cabrita Alves, stated “that this first edition was a huge success, and that the second edition will take place in 2026, with an increase in partners, in addition to everyone who made the first edition happen”. The person in charge also added “that there will be several surprises in the second edition.”
The Missão D’Chef program was awarded the Caixa Social’24 prize, awarded by Caixa Geral de Depósitos, worth 25 thousand euros, as a project in the area of community health.
