The vice-president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, indicated that the suspension of the 40% tariff imposed by the United States on some Brazilian products could be an outcome of a possible conversation between the president (PT) and the American president . The meeting is expected for next Sunday, October 26, in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Southeast Asian economic bloc (Asean).

In an interview with Record, shown on Tuesday night (21), Alckmin declared: “I think it’s a hypothesis – suspending the 40% or accelerating negotiations. But I think there’s room for that.” For the acting president, trade negotiations with the United States have “progressed well”. Alckmin revealed that President Lula asked Trump to suspend the surcharge during the period of negotiations between the two countries.

“What President Lula asked President Trump, in the telephone conversation they had on October 6, was, while negotiating, to suspend the 40%”, informed the minister. “Negotiations cannot be done in 24 hours. So, while negotiating, suspend the 40%”, added Alckmin, reinforcing the Brazilian strategy.
