Meta is cutting approximately 600 jobs at its artificial intelligence unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs, as it seeks to move faster in the competitive AI race.
Employees affected by the cuts were notified on Wednesday, according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg News, although the newly formed TBD Lab group, which includes many of the recent, highly compensated hires, was not affected.
“By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be needed to make a decision, and each person will have more responsibility, scope, and impact,” wrote Alexandr Wang, director of AI at Meta, in a memo to colleagues.

Meta is encouraging affected employees to apply for jobs in other areas of the company and will continue hiring for its AI teams, according to a person familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity as the details were not public. Axios had previously reported the job cuts.
The downsizing is the latest move in Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s fierce AI race, which is investing aggressively to keep up with rivals like Alphabet Inc.’s OpenAI and Google. Meta has spent billions to acquire top industry talent, including a $14.3 billion investment in data labeling startup Scale AI, which led Wang to join Meta and lead its efforts in AI.
