At the end of October, we can sow a certain healthy plant that is worth having on hand. We’re talking about corn salad. This date is a good time for sowing because the ground is still warm enough for the seeds to germinate before winter.
The place of cultivation should be chosen a sunny position with permeable soil. The soil should be dug or loosened with a fork and then leveled with a rake. We dig shallow grooves in it, about 1 cm deep.
We sow the seeds in batches or every 3 cm. Cover them with a thin layer and water them gently. Later, when the seedlings reach a height of several centimeters, they should be cut off, leaving a distance of about 5 cm.
Lamb’s lettuce is not a difficult plant to grow. However, we must take care of a few basic issues so that it can develop healthily. First of all, it needs systematic but moderate watering. This should be done so that the soil is constantly slightly moist. Overdrying could cause the corn salad to stop growing and its leaves to turn bitter.
It is also worth remembering not to use too intense nitrogen, as corn salad does not like excess nitrogen. Instead of fertilizers from the store, we can use a small amount of compost. Let’s also make sure to weed the corn salad regularly. Due to the fact that it has a shallow root system, weeds should be removed manually to avoid damaging its roots.
The plant can be harvested when it forms dense rosettes of leaves. They should be cut just above the ground. Lamb’s lettuce tolerates frosts down to -10 degrees Celsius, so it can be left in the ground for the winter.. However, it should be covered with a light agrotextile.
