The announcement comes at a time when the impasse in the war in Ukraine continues, after several interventions by Trump – particularly with Putin
The United States is preparing to announce a new set of sanctions against Russia this Wednesday or, at the latest, this Thursday morning, revealed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
“We will announce, either after the markets close this afternoon or first thing tomorrow morning, a substantial strengthening of sanctions against Russia,” Bessent told reporters at the White House.
The government official did not detail what the new measures would be, but described them as a “significant increase” in economic pressure on Moscow.
The sanctions are part of the US strategy of continuing to isolate Russia in response to the war in Ukraine, at a time when Western allies are discussing ways to reinforce financial and military support for Kiev.
The decision also comes at a time when Donald Trump, who has sought to position himself as a potential mediator in the conflict, has failed to reach any understanding with the Kremlin that would allow progress towards ending the war.
