The governments of Brazil and the United States agreed that the meeting between presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump will take place next Sunday (Brasília time), the opening day of the summit event of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), in Malaysia. Only the meeting time is pending, according to diplomats with knowledge of the matter.
After the ceremony, Lula will have bilateral meetings, including with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and other leaders from the region.
In Kuala Lumpur, there is an 11 hour difference compared to Brasília. The estimated opening time for the Asean meeting is 10 am, which corresponds to 11 pm on Saturday in Brazil. Thus, Lula’s bilaterals begin after this moment, in the early hours of Sunday.

The meeting between the presidents of Brazil and the United States is being prepared by the chancelleries of both countries. About two weeks ago, they spoke on the phone for half an hour. The dialogue was followed by a meeting in Washington, last Thursday, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
In both cases, the focus was on the economy. This was not about former president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of an attempted coup d’état.
Authorities monitoring the issue in Brasília believe that the meeting could mark the beginning of a change in the bilateral relationship, paving the way for trade negotiations and a more stable political dialogue. The expectation is that there will be willingness on both sides to overcome the worst crisis in more than 200 years of relations between Brazil and the United States.
