The peace summit of US President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest will take place, however, it is not yet known exactly when this will happen. According to the telex.hu server, this was announced on Wednesday by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó after a meeting with the head of American diplomacy, Marco Rubio, in Washington, reports the TASR correspondent in Budapest.
Szijjártó stated that his meeting with Rubio took place in an excellent atmosphere, while the upcoming visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Washington was also discussed. According to Szijjártó, the Americans have not given up the idea of a peace summit at all. the question is timing and when the preparatory work will be completed to make the summit a success.
According to the head of Hungarian diplomacy, Rubio said that preparations are underway, but the American side sees the point of the summit only if “it can bring real results, if it has a result that will be satisfactory to all and that can bring a long-term sustainable peace in Central Europe closer”.
The biggest obstacle on the way to the peace summit in Budapest is Trump’s call to freezing of the front lines and an immediate ceasefire between the Russians and the Ukrainians. Ukraine indicated that it would accept this condition, but the Russians rejected it, the server writes. Szijjártó denied that the negotiations between the US and Russian foreign ministries have stopped and, according to him, “there is no doubt” that if the peace summit is successfully prepared, it will take place in Budapest.
