Measure is part of a plan by the government of Rio de Janeiro to raise funds and reduce the State’s billion-dollar debt with the Union
The Budget Committee of the State Legislative Assembly (Alerj) approved the inclusion of the Maracanã Complex in a list of public assets that may be sold. The initiative is part of a state government project that aims to increase revenue to pay off a debt with the Union estimated at R$200 billion.
The proposal for the sale of public assets was sent by the Executive to the Rio de Janeiro parliament and, during processing in the commission, it underwent changes. Deputies excluded 16 properties from the original list and added 30 new addresses, including the iconic sports complex.
The state’s objective is to join Propague, a Federal Government program for renegotiating the debts of federal entities. The sale of state assets, such as Maracanã, is seen as one of the main strategies to make the agreement viable.
The Maracanã Complex includes not only the football stadium, but also the Maracanãzinho Gymnasium, the Célio de Barros Athletics Stadium and the Júlio Delamare Water Park.
Despite its inclusion on the list, the privatization still needs to undergo further discussions at Alerj before being implemented. Currently, the Maracanã stadium is under concession by the duo for a period of 20 years, with contractual obligations that provide for investments in the maintenance and improvement of the site’s infrastructure.
