MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA* – Amazon launched this Wednesday (22) a prototype of smart glasses for delivery partners. The initiative aims to speed up the delivery process, reduce the use of cell phones and, consequently, increase security. The accessory is in the testing phase and there is no forecast for one, as Meta and Ray-Ban did.
Developed for Amazon delivery partners, the model promises to make work easier: it displays maps, alerts you to potential dangers, such as the presence of a dog in the garden, and helps identify the products to be delivered. Currently, many delivery processes are carried out via smartphone, such as photographing the delivery and reporting possible incidents or delays. Therefore, the idea is to free the hands of workers.
“Developed through monitoring and direct observation, each design element reflects the needs of delivery people. Additionally, through AI and embedded software, the glasses share information for future deliveries”, says Beryl Tomay, vice president of transportation and delivery experience at Amazon, during the Delivering The Future event, in Milpitas, California.

O InfoMoney tested the glasses: they are light, have a modern aesthetic and display a screen on the right side lens with instructions, recommendations and alerts. The model is still in the testing phase in the USA and is not expected to arrive in Brazil.
The delivery person using the accessory can add lenses, if necessary.

How does it work?
In practice, the glasses use sensors with AI and computer vision, along with cameras, to create a display screen that includes everything from navigation details to danger alerts and delivery tasks.
As Tomay explained, when drivers park at the delivery location, the glasses are automatically activated and the delivery person receives delivery information — directly in their field of vision — starting with locating the correct packages inside the vehicles to the corresponding houses.

The glasses are always worn with a vest, through which it is possible to control the functions of the glasses, such as taking photos, for example. The vest works as a kind of computer that stores the accessory’s data.
Amazon states that it listened to hundreds of delivery partners to develop an accessory that makes sense in everyday life. The button on the vest was one of the suggestions received: delivery people find it easier to use the button at chest height than to spend the whole day holding their hands to their heads to operate the device.

At the end of each delivery, the partner must photograph the package at its destination and send the image to the system.
